This post is for educational purposes. It explains a news report and what the numbers mean, not what you should buy, sell, or hold. It isn't tailored to you. A merger has not been announced, and everything about it here is analyst speculation.
Updated October 17, 2026. Bitcoin is about $81,508 at time of writing. Holdings and rankings are from BitcoinTreasuries.net (October 15) and company filings. They change often, so verify before relying on them.
Quick answer
- Barclays says Tesla and SpaceX could announce a merger before December. No deal has been announced.
- Tesla holds 11,509 BTC and SpaceX holds 18,712 BTC. Combined: 30,221 BTC, about $2.46B.
- That would rank 6th among public Bitcoin treasuries, behind Strategy, Metaplanet, Twenty One, Strive and MARA.
- A merger adds two existing balances. It doesn't buy a single new Bitcoin.
A Barclays note this week says Elon Musk's Tesla and SpaceX could announce a merger before the end of the year. The headline many people noticed was the Bitcoin: put the two companies together and they'd hold 30,221 BTC, enough to be the sixth-largest public Bitcoin treasury in the world. Here's what's actually known, what's speculation, and what I think it does and doesn't tell us about Bitcoin on corporate balance sheets.
Are Tesla and SpaceX Really Merging?
Not yet. On October 14, 2026, Barclays analyst Dan Levy told clients an announcement could come before Tesla's annual meeting, which has to be held by December 6. Neither company has announced a deal (BitcoinTreasuries.net).
What Barclays lays out:
- Structure: SpaceX buys Tesla in an all-stock deal, likely at a premium for Tesla shareholders.
- Size: Barclays values SpaceX at about $2.1 trillion and Tesla at about $1.5 trillion, with Musk owning roughly 37% of the combined company and about 56% of the voting power.
- Pitch: an AI story, linking Tesla's Robotaxi and Optimus with SpaceX's AI work.
- Timing: if it isn't announced before the annual meeting, Barclays expects it within six to 12 months.
Any deal would still need both boards, both sets of shareholders, and an antitrust review, and Barclays also flags possible national security questions. Prediction markets have been more skeptical than the note: one report put the odds of a deal before the end of 2026 at roughly 19–24% (BigGo Finance). So I treat this as a scenario, not a plan.
How Much Bitcoin Do Tesla and SpaceX Hold?
| Company | BTC held | Approx. value* | Rank today |
|---|---|---|---|
| SpaceX | 18,712 | $1.53B | 7th |
| Tesla | 11,509 | $0.94B | 11th |
| Combined | 30,221 | $2.46B | 6th (hypothetical) |
*At $81,508 per BTC. Some articles quote $3.3B for the combined stack because they used an earlier, higher Bitcoin price.
The two stories behind those numbers are very different. SpaceX disclosed its 18,712 BTC in its IPO filing in May 2026 and later confirmed it was still holding all of it through the second quarter. Tesla bought about $1.5 billion of Bitcoin in early 2021 and then sold roughly 75% of it in the second quarter of 2022; the 11,509 BTC it still has is what's left.
Where Would the Combined Company Rank?
Sixth. Here are the public Bitcoin treasuries around that spot, per BitcoinTreasuries.net on October 15 (Strategy, at 848,250 BTC, is left off so the other bars stay readable):
The combined company would sit about 5,356 BTC behind fifth-place MARA and about 8,221 BTC ahead of Bullish. And Strategy is in a different league: at roughly 848,000 BTC it holds around two thirds of everything public companies own.
How Fast Has Public Company Bitcoin Holding Grown?
To see why this keeps making headlines, zoom out. Public companies' total Bitcoin holdings have grown several-fold over the last five years:
Holdings went from roughly 200,000 BTC to more than 1.2 million, about six times as much, and more than doubled in 2024 alone. For the full picture of who holds it and how many companies are involved, see my earlier post on public companies holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets.

My honest take is that the ranking is the smaller story. A few things I keep in mind:
- It's arithmetic, not buying. Adding 18,712 and 11,509 doesn't create new demand. No new Bitcoin is bought by the merger itself. It just moves two balances onto one list.
- It's a signal about acceptance. A trillion-dollar company group with Bitcoin in the notes of its balance sheet is a sign that holding Bitcoin has become ordinary for large companies, which fits the broader trend in the chart above.
- Intent matters more than the number. Tesla showed that corporate holders can sell: it dumped about 75% in 2022. What a combined company does next, add, hold or sell, would tell us more than where it ranks.
- Bitcoin is a small part of this story for them. At about $2.46B, the stack is tiny next to a combined valuation Barclays puts around $3.6 trillion. The merger rationale is AI and control, not Bitcoin.
If you want to think about what holding Bitcoin means to an individual instead of a corporation, I wrote about that in why Bitcoin gives power to individuals, and about timing in whether it's a good time to buy Bitcoin. If you prefer to buy steadily instead of reacting to headlines, the DCA calculator shows how that plays out, and this guide covers how to get notified when Bitcoin drops.
What to Watch Next
- Any formal announcement from Tesla or SpaceX before the December 6 annual meeting deadline.
- Whether a deal gets board, shareholder, and antitrust approval.
- Any change in either company's Bitcoin holdings in upcoming filings.
